The Report is a numerical overview of the agency’s 2022 response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a summary of progress in addressing public health recovery priorities. The Community Drug Strategy for the City of Greater Sudbury has received confirmation that tranq/non-opioid ‘xylazine’ has been found locally in Sudbury and districts. A person may be exposed to xylazine when using other substances. Keep reading

Public Health Sudbury & Districts is advising residents of the Town of Espanola who consumed water from the Espanola Drinking Water System between 10:15 p.m. on January 31, 2023, and 8:30 a.m. on February 1, 2023, to monitor themselves for gastrointestinal symptoms due to potential exposure to Cryptosporidiosis. A mechanical issue with the coagulant feed at the Espanola Water Treatment Plant resulted in potentially improperly treated water entering the distribution system. The issue at the plant has been resolved and the risk is very low that anyone who has consumed this water during the affected times will experience any ill health effects. Water entering the distribution system after 8:30 a.m. on February 1, 2023, has been properly treated. Keep reading

The new Omicron sub-variant, XBB (including XBB.1.5) has been detected in the Public Health Sudbury & Districts service area. Some reports show that XXB is the most transmissible variant detected to date and projections for this week are that it will make up over 20% of all strains detected in Ontario. Public Health Sudbury & Districts is reminding everyone of the importance of continuing to practise personal protective measures to prevent COVID-19 transmission, including staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations and getting a bivalent booster when eligible.
“If it’s been more than six months since you completed your primary vaccination series, your last COVID-19 booster, or since your last infection, now is the time to get a bivalent booster dose,” said Dr. Imran Adrian Khan, Public Health Physician with Public Health Sudbury & Districts. “A bivalent booster helps the immune system to remember how to recognize and fight COVID-19 and it provides greater protection against the Omicron strains of COVID-19 now circulating,” added Dr. Khan. On January 17, 2023, Public Health Sudbury & Districts received notification from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) that a fuel oil spill that originally occurred on January 14, 2023, at a residence on Gennings Street, Sudbury, has now migrated to the shoreline of Ramsey Lake in Greater Sudbury. Public Health has directly notified residents in the affected area. Keep reading
