With hot, humid weather in the forecast for the next few days, Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a heat warning within Public Health Sudbury & Districts’ service area beginning Sunday, September 3, 2023, for the following locations:
Greater Sudbury and vicinity
Markstay-Warren, St. Charles
Chapleau, Missinaibi Lake
Gogama, Foleyet
Heat warnings are issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada when the forecast rises for two days to 29 degrees Celsius or above during the day and 18 degrees Celsius or above at night, or the humidex is 36 or above. Keep reading

The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has advised Public Health Sudbury & Districts that results from samples taken July 31, 2023, from Ramsey Lake are positive for blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). The samples contained a species of cyanobacteria that can produce toxins. Keep reading
Public Health Sudbury & Districts has received laboratory results confirming an adult has tested positive for Lyme disease with investigations indicating the disease was most likely locally acquired in the Sudbury East area.
Although reports of locally acquired Lyme disease remain uncommon, people need to protect themselves when enjoying the outdoors. Blacklegged ticks infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease have been found in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts in past years; however, they are commonly found in rural areas along the north shores of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Lake Superior, and the St. Lawrence River, as well as in the Rainy River area of northwestern Ontario.
“People enjoying the outdoors need to check for ticks immediately after activities like gardening or hiking. This is one of the simplest ways you can protect yourself from Lyme disease,” said Ashley DeRocchis, an environmental support officer with Public Health Sudbury & Districts. Keep reading
Public Health Sudbury & Districts has lifted the drinking water advisory that came into effect Sunday, August 13, 2023, for residents of the City of Greater Sudbury in the area north of 138 Skead Road to Old Skead Road, including all adjoining streets.
Public Health issued the drinking water advisory because of a temporary loss of pressure in the municipal water system. The water has been tested to ensure its safety.
“The bacteriological quality of the water supply has been tested with no adverse results being reported,” said Burgess Hawkins, a manager in Public Health’s Health Protection Division. “Residents in the affected areas may notice chlorine odours and discoloured water.” Keep reading

Public Health Sudbury & Districts has received confirmation that a mosquito on Manitoulin Island has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNv). This mosquito was detected through routine surveillance conducted by the health unit. The health unit traps mosquitoes annually to identify mosquitoes in the Public Health Sudbury & Districts area and to find out if those mosquitoes are carrying WNv.
Positive mosquitoes were last detected in the Public Health Sudbury & Districts area in 2018, within the City of Greater Sudbury. Keep reading
Public Health Sudbury & Districts has issued a drinking water advisory effective immediately for all residents of the City of Greater Sudbury in the area north of 138 Skead Road at Good Sheppard Cemetery, to the north intersection of Skead Road and Old Skead Road, including all streets coming off Skead Road and Old Skead Road.
