Correction to the Notification Pathway for Special Pathogens

Background

While outbreaks of special pathogens have occurred in many parts of the world, there have been no confirmed cases in Ontario to date. Special pathogens include:

• Ebola virus
• Marburg virus disease
• Lassa fever
• other viral hemorrhagic fevers with person-to-person transmission
• other emerging pathogens that
• are highly infectious involving human-to-human transmission
• have the potential to cause severe disease or high mortality
• might not have effective prevention or treatment measures available

Implication for practice

If you suspect a case of a special pathogen, notify both of the following:

• Ministry of Health, Health System Emergency Management Branch
  • Call the 24/7 Health Care Provider Hotline: 1.866.212.2272, ext. 1.
• Public Health Sudbury & Districts
  • Call 705.522.9200, ext. 772 (toll-free 1.866.522.9200) or after hours and on weekends at 705.688.4366.
