Situation Summary

A cluster of Andes strain hantavirus (ANDV) cases has been identified among passengers of the MV Hondius cruise ship. At this time, the risk to the public in Ontario remains low. All known Ontario contacts have been identified, are self-isolating and are being actively monitored by their local public health agency.

Currently, there are no identified cases or contacts in Sudbury or districts. No additional local actions are required beyond awareness and reference to the guidance linked below.

Clinical Awareness and Assessment

Clinicians should assess patients presenting with symptoms compatible with ANDV infection or reported exposure for relevant epidemiological links, including:

• travel history on an identified flight associated with a confirmed case
• or close contact with a confirmed or suspected case associated with the current cluster.

In the absence of an epidemiological link or suspicion for another special pathogen, patients can be managed according to routine clinical practice.

Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Guidance

Hospitals are asked to review the Public Health Ontario (PHO) resource:
“Infection Prevention and Control Precautions for Hantavirus, Andes Strain (ANDV)” (May 11, 2026) and share it with relevant staff.

The PHO guidance notes that human-to-human transmission of ANDV is uncommon and associated with close, prolonged contact.

Notification and Coordination

If ANDV or other special pathogen is suspected based on clinical presentation or exposure risk:

• Do not initiate testing or arrange patient transfer independently
• Immediately contact the Ministry of Health, Health System Emergency Management Branch (HSEMB) via the 24/7 Health Care Provider Hotline: 1-866-212-2272 (ext. 1)
• Follow the Notification Pathway for Special Pathogens (Ministry of Health)
• Report on suspected cases and contacts to Public Health Sudbury & Districts.

This ensures appropriate coordination of testing, transport, and infection control measures.
